Dexter Gordon – Dexter Calling
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Though he first recorded in the late-1940s, Dexter Gordon’s 1961 signing to Blue Note Records marked the beginning of a career renaissance for the great tenor saxophonist after a tumultuous decade. With the swift one-two punch of his label debut Doin’ Allright and Dexter Calling, recorded just three days apart in May 1961, Dexter solidified his return to form with aplomb. Dexter Calling featured an entirely different band with Dexter holding forth at the helm of a potent quartet with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The set opens with the soulful hard bop gem “Soul Sister” before shifting into high gear and proving his dexterity on hard-charging numbers like “Modal Mood,” “I Want More,” and “Clear the Dex.” Gordon slows down for the stunning ballad “Ernie’s Tune” before closing the set with Charlie Chaplin’s joyous “Smile.”
McCoy Tyner – Asante
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Pianist McCoy Tyner had been increasingly looking to Mother Africa for inspiration on his Blue Note recordings of the late-1960s on pieces like “African Village” and “Message from the Nile.” With his 1970 album Asante, Tyner brought those influences to the fore with a powerful set rooted in the swirling percussive rhythmic bed laid by drummer Billy Hart and percussionist Mtume. Bassist Buster Williams, guitarist Ted Dunbar, and alto saxophonist Andrew White make up the rest of the extraordinary ensemble on this four-song set that also includes the ethereal vocals of Songai on the extended album opener “Malika” and the title track. While elements of the modal jazz that Tyner pioneered in the John Coltrane Quartet course through the album, most prominently on the kinetic closing track “Fulfillment,” the music here also pointed towards future creative directions that Tyner would explore.

Lou Donaldson - Wailing With Lou

From his earliest recordings in 1952, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson quickly became a fixture of the Blue Note roster, and over the following 23 years built a tremendous discography on the label that spanned bebop, hard bop, soul jazz, and jazz-funk. One of his earlier efforts was the swinging 1957 bop date Wailing With Lou, which found Donaldson helming a quintet with Donald Byrd on trumpet, Herman Foster on piano, Peck Morrison on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Donaldson and Byrd were a sympatico frontline delivering inspired blowing across a 6-song set split between Donaldson originals (“That Good Old Feeling,” “Move It,” “L.D. Blues”) and standard jazz repertoire including “Caravan,” “Old Folks,” and “There Is No Greater Love.”

The Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was’ admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley, a.k.a. the “Tone Poet,” on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.
Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180g audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc. Every aspect of these Tone Poet releases is done to the highest possible standard. It means that you will never find a superior version. This is IT.
