FROM THE VAULT

Lee Morgan – Sonic Boom

The album was recorded on April 14 & 28, 1967, but not first released until 1979. The inspired frontline of Morgan and “Fathead” Newman was the highlight of this engaging set which presents five Morgan originals and the ballad “I’ll Never Be The Same.”

Lee Morgan (Trumpet), David "Fathead" Newman (Tenor Sax), Cedar Walton (Piano), Ron Carter (Bass), Billy Higgins (Drums).

Lee Morgan – Sweet Honey Bee/Hey Chico

This 45 was originally released in 1969 as part of Blue Note’s 1900 series of 45s as BN 1947, was recorded on September 29, 1966 and taken from Lee Morgan’s album Charisma.

Lee Morgan (Trumpet), Jackie McLean (Alto Sax), Hank Mobley (Tenor Sax), Cedar Walton (Piano), Paul Chambers (Bass), Billy Higgins (Drums)

NEVER-BEFORE-RELEASED DISCOVERY

Live Jam at The Gate of Horn, Chicago, IL (Probably 1959?)

A ‘mysterious’ jam session featuring an early live recording of Lee Morgan that likely took place in 1959 at the legendary Chicago club The Gate of Horn.

Lee Morgan (Trumpet), Ira Sullivan (Saxophone), Nicky Hill (Saxophone), Bobby Timmons (Piano), Spanky DeBrest (Bass), Philly Joe Jones (Drums)
