This Month’s Titles

(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Horace Silver’s 1962 tour of Japan had a profound impact on the pianist who returned to the U.S. and dedicated his subsequent album The Tokyo Blues to his fervent Japanese fans. Along with his quintet featuring trumpeter Blue Mitchell, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor, and drummer John Harris Jr., Silver delivered an inspired 5-song set including his alluring originals “The Tokyo Blues,” “Too Much Sake,” “Sayonara Blues,” and “Ah! So,” as well as Ronnell Bright’s lovely ballad “Cherry Blossom.” Silver had noticed a love of Latin music among the Japanese jazz fans he met and in his compositions he sought to “combine the Japanese feeling in the melodies with the Latin feeling in the rhythms.”
Jackie McLean – Jacknife
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Jackie McLean’s evocative 1965 album Jacknife captured the alto saxophonist in an envelope-pushing post-bop mode. The session featured two trumpeters—Lee Morgan and Charles Tolliver—who are heard together to great effect on Morgan’s groovy “Soft Blue,” but otherwise take turns in the spotlight. McLean also assembled a deeply engaged rhythm section for the date featuring pianist Larry Willis, bassist Larry Ridley, and drummer Jack DeJohnette. McLean’s fiery sound ignites a wide range of material from the expansive modal explorations of Tolliver’s “On The Nile” to the churning rhythms of DeJohnette’s “Climax” to McLean’s own “Blue Fable,” which delivers a loping melody over shifting feels before settling into a deep pocketed swing for emphatic solos by McLean and Morgan.

Donald Byrd - Blackjack
Limited to 1,000 Copies • Individually numbered • Tone Poet Society Exclusive Gold Foil Stamp • Lithographic Print
1967’s Blackjack was the second in a trilogy of albums—along with Mustang and Slow Drag—that trumpeter Donald Byrd made during his late hard bop period with a cast of musicians including alto saxophonist Sonny Red, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Billy Higgins. In a couple years, Byrd would begin evolving his style into the R&B funk fusion that would set the course for his 1970s musical direction, but for now the trumpeter remained rooted in the hard bop that defined the first decade of his Blue Note tenure with elements of modal jazz and funky boogaloo added into the mix. Highlights of this set predominantly consisting of originals by Byrd and Red include the up-tempo swingers “West of the Pecos” and “Pentatonic,” as well as the groove-based numbers “Blackjack” and “Beale Street” which are the source of samples in hip hop classics by Gang Starr and The Pharcyde.
