Donald Byrd – At The Half Note Café, Vol. 2
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Trumpeter Donald Byrd was only 2 years into his 2 decade long Blue Note recording career when he brought his quintet into Manhattan’s Half Note Café in November 1960 to record this soulful, swinging, and highly enjoyable live set of hard bop featuring Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, Duke Pearson on piano, Laymon Jackson on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums. Byrd had already established himself as a leading trumpeter on the scene and was riding high on a creative hot streak that produced the studio albums Off To The Races, Byrd In Hand, Fuego, and Byrd In Flight. At The Half Note Café, Vol. 2 jumps right into Pearson’s brightly swinging “Jeannine” and includes two Byrd tunes—an extended take of the band’s bluesy theme song “Pure D. Funk” & the hard-grooving “Kimyas”—as well as a lilting take on the standard “When Sonny Gets Blue.”
Johnathan Blake – Homeward Bound
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Johnathan Blake’s 2021 Blue Note debut Homeward Bound was a celebration of life and legacy that introduced the drummer-composer’s masterful modern jazz quintet Pentad featuring alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, vibraphonist Joel Ross, keyboardist David Virelles, and bassist Dezron Douglas. The 8-song set is imbued with warmth and swing as heard on the album’s emotional and musical centerpiece, “Homeward Bound (for Ana Grace),” a tribute to Ana Grace Marquez-Greene, the daughter of saxophonist Jimmy Greene and flutist Nelba Marquez-Greene, who perished in the Sandy Hook tragedy. Other standout Blake originals include “Rivers & Parks,” a piece that evokes the distinctive musical styles of both Sam Rivers and Aaron Parks, and the uptempo burner “LLL” dedicated to drummer Larence “Lo” Leathers. The album also looked to unusual sources of repertoire with a stunning arrangement of the South African traditional “Abiyoyo” and a rousing cover of Joe Jackson’s 1982 hit “Steppin’ Out.”

Trumpeter Blue Mitchell had appeared on numerous Blue Note classics as a member of the Horace Silver Quintet in addition to making sideman appearances with Lou Donaldson, Jimmy Smith, Jackie McLean, and others before he began recording his own leader albums for the label. While his first three albums—The Thing To Do, Down With It, and Bring It Home To Me—all featured quintet line-ups, for his 1966 date Boss Horn the palette was expanded to an octet with arrangements by Duke Pearson that created a variety of settings and moods to showcase the trumpeter’s versatility on funky boogaloo grooves, beautiful ballads, blistering modal post-bop, and a joyous Calypso. A top-flight ensemble was assembled for the session including a saxophone section with Jerry Dodgion (alto), Junior Cook (tenor), and Pepper Adams (bari) plus Julian Priester on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, Gene Taylor on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums with pianist Chick Corea replacing Walton on two Corea originals: “Tones for Joan’s Bones” and “Straight Up and Down.”

Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180g audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc.
