Jimmy Smith – The Sermon
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)After he discovered Jimmy Smith in 1956, Blue Note founder Alfred Lion recorded the Hammond B3 organ master frequently in various settings including studio and live dates. The sessions that produced the two albums House Party and The Sermon! strove for the best of both worlds by bringing the unbridled energy of a live blowing session into Manhattan Tower Studio where engineer Rudy Van Gelder could capture the proceedings with sterling sound quality. Recorded on August 25, 1957 and February 25, 1958, The Sermon! comprises three extended workouts enlivened by a stellar cast of musicians including trumpeter Lee Morgan, alto saxophonists Lou Donaldson and George Coleman, tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks, guitarists Kenny Burrell and Eddie McFadden, and drummers Art Blakey and Donald Bailey. The opening title track is a down-home blues that finds a deep pocket and fills the entirety of Side 1, while the flipside kicks into high gear with the brisk minor-key original “J.O.S.” before slowing down for a stunning ballad performance of “Flamingo” showcasing Morgan.
Hank Mobley – Dippin'
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)A benchmark album in Hank Mobley’s superb mid-1960s output, Dippin’ was recorded in 1965 amid an inspired run of sessions that included The Turnaround and A Caddy For Daddy. Dippin’ featured the great tenor saxophonist in a quintet with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Harold Mabern Jr. on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums for an engaging 6-song set spanning boogaloo, bossa nova, ballads, and bop. Highlights include Mobley’s funky opener “The Dip” and hard-swinging modal minor-key number “The Vamp” as well as the Brazilian piece “Recado Bossa Nova” and the gorgeous ballad “I See Your Face Before Me.”

Saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and guitarist Grant Green didn’t record together often, but on the rare occasion when they did the results were, unsurprisingly, deeply soulful and thoroughly enjoyable. The first time the two were captured together on tape was in February 1961 for Turrentine’s excellent two-volume live album Up At Minton’s backed by the saxophonist’s working band with Horace Parlan, George Tucker, and Al Harewood. In November of that year Turrentine and Green reconvened at Van Gelder Studio to record the album Z.T.’s Blues, this time accompanied by a completely different rhythm section featuring Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums who bring a decidedly different feel to the proceedings. Opening with Turrentine’s sole original of the set, the down-home title track, the quintet otherwise swings through a selection of songbook standards with grace and style.

Was brought Joe Harley, a.k.a. the “Tone Poet,” on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.
Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180g audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc. Every aspect of these Tone Poet releases is done to the highest possible standard. It means that you will never find a superior version. This is IT.
