Freddie Hubbard – Hub Cap
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard burst out of the gates taking the jazz world by storm with his Blue Note debut Open Sesame in 1960. Within 14 months he had recorded three more hard bop classics—Goin’ Up, Hub Cap, and Ready For Freddie—each one a showcase for his dynamic playing. Recorded in April 1961, Hub Cap was the first of his Blue Note dates that also highlighted Hubbard’s growing skill as a composer, with four of the album’s six pieces coming from his pen including the hard-charging title track, the alluring, richly-textured “Luana,” and the swaggering shuffle of the swinging “Osie Mae.” Bringing the music to life was a sympatico sextet with trombonist Julian Priester and tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath joining Hubbard on the frontline backed by a rhythm section of pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Larry Ridley, and drummer Philly Joe Jones.
Booker Ervin – Structurally Sound
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Best known for his association with Charles Mingus, the Texas-born tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin was a distinctive soloist with an assertive and immediately recognizable sound. One of Ervin’s pinnacle statements as a leader was the first of his two Pacific Jazz albums, Structurally Sound, which he cut in 1966 shortly after returning to the U.S. from a two-year period of living in Barcelona and working across Europe. Featuring Ervin fronting a top-shelf quintet with Charles Tolliver on trumpet, John Hicks on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Lenny McBrowne on drums, the sublime program included originals by Ervin (“Boo’s Blues”) and Tolliver (“Franess”), songbook standards (“Dancing In The Dark,” “You’re My Everything,” and “Deep Night”), and pieces by eminent jazz composers: Billy Strayhorn’s “Take The ‘A’ Train,” Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments,” and Randy Weston’s “Berkshire Blues.”

Saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and guitarist Grant Green didn’t record together often, but on the rare occasion when they did the results were, unsurprisingly, deeply soulful and thoroughly enjoyable. The first time the two were captured together on tape was in February 1961 for Turrentine’s excellent two-volume live album Up At Minton’s backed by the saxophonist’s working band with Horace Parlan, George Tucker, and Al Harewood. In November of that year Turrentine and Green reconvened at Van Gelder Studio to record the album Z.T.’s Blues, this time accompanied by a completely different rhythm section featuring Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums who bring a decidedly different feel to the proceedings. Opening with Turrentine’s sole original of the set, the down-home title track, the quintet otherwise swings through a selection of songbook standards with grace and style.

The Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was’ admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley, a.k.a. the “Tone Poet,” on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.
Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180g audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc. Every aspect of these Tone Poet releases is done to the highest possible standard. It means that you will never find a superior version. This is IT.
