(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Brooklyn-born pianist Duke Jordan was on the front lines of the bebop revolution as a member of Charlie Parker’s quintet in the late-1940s which also featured a young Miles Davis on trumpet. In 1960, Jordan recorded his sole Blue Note album as a leader, Flight To Jordan, an exemplar hard bop date featuring a top-shelf quintet with Dizzy Reece on trumpet, Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Reggie Workman on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The set presented six fine Jordan original compositions including the minor mode title track, the elegant ballad “Starbrite,” the church-inspired “Deacon Joe,” and the Latin-tinged “Si-Joya.”
Sheila Jordan – Portrait of Shelia
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Detroit-born singer Sheila Jordan moved to New York city in 1951 and became a fixture on the jazz scene, befriending Charlie Parker and studying with the likes of Charles Mingus and Lennie Tristano. Jordan presented her inimitable vocal stylings on her 1962 debut Portrait Of Sheila, one of only two vocal albums recorded for Blue Note during that era. Accompanied by a trio with Barry Galbraith on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Denzil Best on drums, Jordan delivered delightful versions of songbook and jazz standards including swinging takes on Rodgers & Hart’s “Falling In Love With Love” and Irving Berlin’s “Let’s Face The Music And Dance”; expressive ballad singing on Frank Sinatra’s “I’m A Fool To Want You” and Tadd Dameron’s “If You Could See Me Now”; and a tour-de-force voice-bass duo version of Bobby Timmons’ soulful hard bop classic “Dat Dere.”

Elvin Jones - Coalition
Limited to 1,000 Copies • Individually numbered • Tone Poet Society Exclusive Gold Foil Stamp • Lithographic Print
After his legendary run in the seminal John Coltrane Quartet, the master drummer Elvin Jones signed with Blue Note in 1968 and began building his own career as a bandleader. His first two albums for the label—Puttin’ It Together and The Ultimate—were spare sax-bass-drums trio outings that were followed by the expanded ensemble explorations of 1969’s Poly-Currents. Jones then found a happy medium on his 1970 album Coalition featuring Cuban conguero Candido Camero woven into Jones’ intricate polyrhythms with two exceptional saxophonists taking flight—George Coleman on tenor and Frank Foster on alto, tenor, and bass clarinet—anchored by Wilbur Little’s sturdy bass. Opening with the evocative “Shinjitu” composed by Elvin’s wife Keiko Jones, the set also includes originals by Coleman (“5/4 Thing”) and Foster (“Ural Stradania” and “Simone”) as well as an impressionistic rendition of the Jerome Kern standard “Yesterdays.”
