Curtis Amy – Tippin' On Through
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)A powerful wind blew through The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, California on July 29, 1962 as saxophonist Curtis Amy brought a stacked sextet into the legendary venue to record his live album Tippin’ On Through for Pacific Jazz. The brawny Texas tenor had already recorded his hard-charging date Groovin’ Blue and would make his masterpiece Katanga! the following year. Here he surrounds himself with a dynamic unit featuring Roy Brewster on trombone, Roy Ayers on vibraphone, John Houston on piano, Bob Whitlock on bass, and Lawrence Marable on drums for a swinging six-song set including three of his own originals plus tunes by Benny Golson, Dave Brubeck, and George Gershwin.
Bobby Hutcherson – Components
(TONE POET VINYL SERIES)Recorded in 1965, Components makes a strong case for being one of the finest albums that vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson cut for Blue Note over his lengthy association with the label. For the date, Hutcherson assembled a truly remarkable sextet featuring Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto saxophone and flute, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums. The fascinating album captured two sides of Hutcherson’s musical personality with Side A presenting post-bop gems by Hutcherson including the sublime “Little B’s Poem” and the gorgeous ballad “Tranquility,” while Side B explored Chambers’ more avant-garde compositions.

Lou Donaldson - Wailing With Lou

From his earliest recordings in 1952, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson quickly became a fixture of the Blue Note roster, and over the following 23 years built a tremendous discography on the label that spanned bebop, hard bop, soul jazz, and jazz-funk. One of his earlier efforts was the swinging 1957 bop date Wailing With Lou, which found Donaldson helming a quintet with Donald Byrd on trumpet, Herman Foster on piano, Peck Morrison on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Donaldson and Byrd were a sympatico frontline delivering inspired blowing across a 6-song set split between Donaldson originals (“That Good Old Feeling,” “Move It,” “L.D. Blues”) and standard jazz repertoire including “Caravan,” “Old Folks,” and “There Is No Greater Love.”

The Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was’ admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley, a.k.a. the “Tone Poet,” on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.
Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180g audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc. Every aspect of these Tone Poet releases is done to the highest possible standard. It means that you will never find a superior version. This is IT.
