Blue Note Records was founded on the hot jazz of the late-1930s, but by the late-1940s Alfred Lion had become enthralled by the modern sounds of bebop and began recording several of the new music’s innovators making the first leader recordings of the brilliant pianist/composers Bud Powell & Thelonious Monk, as well as foundational bebop recordings by Fats Navarro, Miles Davis, Milt Jackson, J.
